Somalia is emerging as a key player in an ambitious space infrastructure project that could redefine its role in global aerospace development.

In partnership with the Türkiye Space Agency, the country is preparing to host what is expected to become Africa’s first operational space launch facility. The project spans a vast coastal area along the Indian Ocean, selected for its strategic advantages and low population density.

Officials indicate that construction is now underway, marking a major step forward in a plan that has been under development for years as part of Türkiye’s national space program.

Somalia’s proximity to the equator makes it an ideal location for rocket launches. At this latitude, the Earth’s rotation provides an additional velocity boost, allowing rockets to carry heavier payloads while using less fuel.

The country’s coastline along the Indian Ocean also reduces risks associated with launch debris, making it safer compared to inland alternatives. Stable terrain and favorable weather conditions further support its suitability for large-scale aerospace operations.

The planned spaceport is expected to serve both civilian and strategic purposes. It will support satellite launches, scientific missions, and commercial space activities, while also functioning as a testing ground for long-range rocket systems..

The initiative aligns with Türkiye’s broader goal of achieving independent access to space, reducing reliance on foreign launch providers, and advancing domestic capabilities in critical technologies such as propulsion systems, avionics, and satellite engineering.

For Somalia, the project represents more than technological progress. Officials say it is expected to generate employment, attract foreign investment, and create new revenue streams through commercial launch services in future phases.

President Hassan Sheikh Mohamud has emphasized the economic potential of the initiative, noting that it could play a key role in positioning Somalia as a regional hub for advanced technology and innovation

The spaceport forms part of Türkiye’s long-term roadmap to expand its presence in the global space sector.
