Regional and local government elections are taking place today across Hirshabelle and Galmudug, two federal member states of Somalia. Together, these regions are home to more than 5 million people. From Afbarwaaqo, near the border between Mudug and Nugaal, to Balcad, the electoral area stretches roughly 900 kilometers.
The turnout and participation reflect growing public engagement in elections at both the state and federal levels. The Somali government describes the process as an important milestone in the country’s transition from prolonged instability toward greater peace, political participation, and development.
