Somalia is moving into a strategic position that extends well beyond the politics of the Horn of Africa.

The Somalia–Türkiye space partnership should be viewed not simply as a technology project, but as part of a broader shift in regional power.

Somalia’s location gives it unusual strategic value. Its long Indian Ocean coastline, proximity to the equator, and position between East Africa, the Red Sea, the Gulf and the wider Indian Ocean make it increasingly relevant to communications, maritime security, satellite infrastructure, surveillance and future space activity.

Türkiye’s investment in Somalia therefore carries significance beyond bilateral relations. Ankara is building a long-term presence in a country that sits at the intersection of several important economic, security and geopolitical routes.

At the same time, Egypt is expanding its military and security engagement with Somalia, while Pakistan and Saudi Arabia continue to develop their own capabilities in space, defense technology, satellite systems and strategic communications.

The key point is not that these countries are forming a single bloc. They are not.

What matters is that Somalia is becoming strategically relevant to several powers at the same time, each for different reasons.

For Türkiye, Somalia offers access to East Africa and the Indian Ocean.

For Egypt, Somalia is increasingly important for the wider Red Sea, maritime security, and regional balance.

For Saudi Arabia, Somalia sits across from one of the world’s most important shipping and trade corridors.

For Pakistan, its close defense and technology relationship with Türkiye could create opportunities for future cooperation in aerospace, satellites and communications.

Taken together, these developments point to a wider strategic network connecting East Africa, the Middle East and South Asia.

Space is becoming another layer of geopolitical competition, alongside ports, trade routes, defense partnerships and energy. Somalia is increasingly important because many of these interests now meet in the same place.
