Former Somali President Sheikh Sharif Sheikh Ahmed recently circulated a warning on social media suggesting that he and those around him could face an attack.

The statement spread rapidly online and generated an immediate question: Is there credible intelligence behind the warning, or is this primarily a political message designed for public consumption?

Beesha Sheekh Shariif oo wacad ku martay in madaxtooyada ay ka bilaaban doonto hadii Shariif la weeraro "Xasanow hadaad Xabad Bilowdid Madaxtooyada ayay ka bilaabanaysaa Ogow, Shariif anaa difaacaayo" Cariish. pic.twitter.com/pv7bPOu3P8

Qaran24 examined the claim and spoke with more than 10 officials working across Somalia’s security institutions, including personnel linked to the National Intelligence and Security Agency, the Somali Police Force, military units responsible for security in Mogadishu, and Haramcad forces.

The broad picture emerging from those conversations is more complicated than the viral social-media narrative.

Several officers told Qaran24 that they were not aware of specific intelligence confirming an imminent attack against Sheikh Sharif. Some said they first became aware of the claim through social media.

One official explained:

“That does not mean the security agencies have no intelligence. It means we do not currently have complete information confirming the type of attack being described. Our daily focus remains monitoring security threats to Mogadishu, particularly threats connected to Al-Shabaab and other armed actors.”

Another official, who works closely on security matters in one of Mogadishu’s districts and coordinates with intelligence and military structures, told Qaran24 that authorities had separately received reports concerning efforts to rent properties near areas where senior former officials and political figures reside.

According to the officer, property owners in sensitive areas have been reminded that new tenants should comply with existing security procedures.

Those procedures can include identifying the incoming tenant, establishing why the property is being rented, recording a guarantor or responsible party, and, when legally required, completing security registration through the relevant authorities.

The official stressed that such procedures are not supposed to target any one political group.

“Political immunity or government status does not remove the responsibility to prevent private property from being used in ways that could endanger national security,” he said.

A Separate Dispute Over Privately Owned Property

Qaran24 also learned that some of the properties located near residences occupied by former senior officials belong to private citizens.

Several owners reportedly want to redevelop their land, renovate existing structures, or construct larger commercial and residential buildings.

In some cases, however, existing rental agreements have made redevelopment difficult.

A security official said some of those disagreements have already been resolved and stressed that the government does not intend to interfere with lawfully owned private property without a legal basis.

“We have told owners that their property remains private property,” the officer said. “The government is not seeking to interfere with that. What we ask is that owners cooperate with authorities if they become aware of activity that could pose a legitimate security concern.”

Why Would Additional Nearby Houses Be Needed?

Qaran24 asked one officer why political figures who already occupy residences in the area might seek to rent additional neighboring properties.
The officer said authorities were examining several possibilities but declined to provide details about matters he described as part of an ongoing security assessment.
He said security agencies routinely consider whether adjoining properties could be used to expand access, movement, or operational space around politically sensitive compounds.

What Do Security Officials Make of Sheikh Sharif’s Warning?

When asked specifically about Sheikh Sharif’s claim that the government could move against him, one officer said the security agencies could not confirm that allegation.

The officer described two possibilities being discussed internally.

The first, he said, is that the warning may primarily be political messaging intended to dominate public discussion and social media.

The second is that security agencies must always assess whether escalating political tensions could eventually translate into street confrontation or wider security disturbances.

“I cannot discuss every detail,” the officer said, “but these matters go through security analysis. We assess not only what is happening today, but what could develop later.”

“Any Action Has to Be Documented and Lawful”

The officer said security institutions are documenting incidents they believe could have implications for public safety.

According to him, if authorities believe individuals are involved in incitement, obstruction of security personnel, or other unlawful conduct, they want any response to follow a documented legal process.

“The government does not want a situation where tomorrow it is accused of simply attacking the opposition,” he said. “If an unlawful act occurs, there must be evidence, documentation, photographs, video, and information that can survive legal scrutiny.”

He said the purpose of such documentation would be to distinguish legitimate political opposition from actions that may violate security laws.

That distinction matters.

Political disagreement is protected political activity.

Violence, armed mobilization, or attempts to obstruct lawful security operations are different matters and should be judged through evidence and the courts.

What Happens if Political Tension Turns Violent?

Qaran24 also asked what security forces would do if political tensions escalated beyond social media rhetoric and developed into armed confrontation.

The officer said the security services believe they have the capacity to respond rapidly, while emphasizing that civilian protection would remain the first priority.

“Mogadishu today is not the Mogadishu of the old war years,” he said. “If a serious security confrontation occurs, our objective is to contain it, minimize civilian casualties, and bring it to an end as quickly as possible.”

Asked about politicians protected by parliamentary or constitutional immunity, the officer acknowledged that any action against them would have to follow the relevant legal and constitutional procedures, including parliamentary involvement where required.

“No individual is above the law,” he said. “But the government itself must also operate within the law.”

The Bottom Line

Based on Qaran24’s interviews, there is currently no independently verified evidence establishing that the Somali government is preparing an attack against former President Sheikh Sharif Sheikh Ahmed.

What does appear clear is that Mogadishu’s security institutions are closely monitoring politically sensitive locations, neighboring properties, and activity around compounds occupied by former senior officials.

That leaves one central question:

Was Sheikh Sharif’s warning based on specific intelligence, or was it a political message designed to generate public attention and pressure through social media?

That question should ultimately be answered by evidence, not by viral posts.

#UPDATE: Himilo Qaran says military mobilisation is underway on orders from outgoing President Hassan Sheikh and warns against attacks on opposition leaders’ compounds.

The party urged security officers to reject unlawful orders and called for an immediate election agreement. https://t.co/p1AyNWLkLp pic.twitter.com/A2dE7E2YT7
