MOGADISHU, September 10, 2026 — Somali President Hassan Sheik Mohamud inspected newly trained units of the Somali National Army’s 21st Gorgor Commando Brigade at the headquarters of the army’s First Division in Mogadishu.

During the visit, the president reviewed the troops’ living quarters, command offices, military hospital, and logistics facilities. He also received operational briefings from senior commanders and assessed the units’ readiness for upcoming national assignments.

Somali military sources say one of the newly prepared battalions is expected to be deployed to Baidoa. The federal government has not yet publicly confirmed the reported deployment or disclosed its intended mission.

President Mohamud praised the Gorgor Commandos for their role in defending Somalia and fighting Al-Shabaab. He instructed the troops to remain prepared to fulfill their constitutional responsibilities and advance the country’s objective of defeating the militant organization.

The president also thanked Türkiye for its continued support in rebuilding, training, and equipping the Somali National Army—particularly specialized formations such as the Gorgor Commandos.
