Somalia Boosts Military with Modern Arms from Egypt and Turkey.

Somalia’s Federal Right to Arms and the Role of Ethiopia in Regional Instability

Somalia has  received one of the largest modern arms shipments from its international allies, including Egypt and Turkey. Preliminary reports from Somalia indicate that the delivery, which is expected to take three days, includes heavy artillery, anti-tank weapons, shields, and air-to-ground missiles provided by Egypt.

This significant support suggests that Somalia is undergoing a resurgence, restoring its long-lost strength in the region. Just a month ago, aircraft carrying military aid landed in Mogadishu, sent by Egypt, a close ally and brotherly nation. This move underscored Egypt’s commitment to supporting Somalia’s rebuilding efforts.

Egypt, known as a major military power in Africa, continues to play a prominent role on the continent, demonstrating its influence by extending its military prowess to aid Somalia. The support comes at a time when Somalia is striving to regain stability and assert itself as a formidable force in the region.

In recent years, Somalia has worked to strengthen its military capabilities and fight against insurgent groups like Al-Shabaab. This renewed military cooperation with countries like Egypt signals a new chapter in Somalia’s quest to enhance its defense capabilities, contributing to both national security and broader regional stability.

The military support from Egypt is not just about arms but also reflects strategic partnerships that could influence the balance of power in the Horn of Africa. Egypt’s involvement may also be seen in the context of its broader foreign policy objectives in the region, particularly its interest in curbing the influence of rival powers and securing its own strategic interests in the Red Sea and the Horn of Africa.

Since early 2024, tensions between Somalia and Ethiopia have escalated following a controversial port agreement between Ethiopia and Somaliland region of Somalia .

This deal grants the Ethiopian Navy access and potentially establishes a military base along the Gulf of Aden. In return, Ethiopia has promised to recognize Somaliland as a sovereign entity.

Somali President Sheikh Mohamud has firmly rejected the recent port deal between Ethiopia and Somaliland, labeling it a violation of international law. He stated, “We will not stand idly by and watch our sovereignty being compromised.” His remarks highlight Somalia’s concerns over territorial integrity and sovereignty amid escalating tensions in the region. The president’s stance underscores the potential for increased conflict as Somalia seeks to assert its position against the backdrop of Ethiopia’s growing influence in Somaliland.

Egyptian President Abdel Fattah el-Sisi has expressed strong support for Somalia in light of Ethiopia’s recent agreement with Somaliland, which grants Ethiopia access to the sea and the potential for a military base. At a joint news conference with Somali President Hassan Sheikh Mohamud, el-Sisi stated, “Egypt will not allow anyone to threaten Somalia or affect its security.” His remarks underscore Egypt’s commitment to safeguarding Somalia’s sovereignty and stability, highlighting the growing regional tensions stemming from Ethiopia’s strategic moves in the Horn of Africa.
