Somalia’s planned space center with Türkiye could become a major opportunity not only for Somalia, but for Africa as a whole. African countries are using more satellites for communications, security, weather forecasting, agriculture and internet connectivity, yet most still depend on launch facilities outside the continent.

Somalia has a natural advantage: geography. Its location close to the equator, combined with a long coastline facing the Indian Ocean, makes it highly suitable for certain satellite launches. Rockets launched eastward can benefit from Earth’s rotation, while the open ocean provides a safer flight path away from densely populated areas.

For Africa, a Somali launch center could mean closer, potentially cheaper and more accessible space services. African governments could eventually launch communications, observation and security satellites from the continent instead of relying entirely on Europe, Asia or the Americas.

For Somalia, the benefits could be even bigger: launch revenue, foreign investment, high-skilled jobs, technology transfer and greater political influence. Somalia may not have the largest economy in Africa, but it has something extremely valuable for the space industry—the right location.

Somalia’s greatest space asset may already be on the map.
