Open Letter from the Southern Somali Diaspora to Abdirahman Abdishakur

We, members of the Southern Somali diaspora, are expressing our dedication and optimism for our beloved homeland. As Somalis who value our connection to our country, we have closely followed the efforts to rebuild and strengthen Somalia. Under the leadership of President Hassan Sheikh Mohamud and Hamza Abdi Bare, the Somali government has been working tirelessly to bring stability, prosperity, and peace to our nation. Their efforts include Enhancing security in the capital city Liberating the country from al-Shaba- Rebuilding the army forces Strengthening the economy.

We understand the immense challenges and the relentless efforts required to overcome them. The path to rebuilding our country is full of difficulties. However, it is a journey that requires the unwavering support and encouragement of all Somalis, both within and outside our borders.

As a prominent politician and member of the Somali Parliament, your role is not just a position but a responsibility. You are in a unique position of influence, where your words and actions carry significant weight and have the power to shape public opinion and inspire collective action. Therefore, we urge you to support the government’s efforts constructively and positively, as your contribution is crucial in our fight against al-Shabab.

While constructive criticism is essential for accountability and growth, persistent negativity and divisive rhetoric can undermine progress. For example, creating a narrative that President Hassan Sheikh will stay in power after his term ends does not help the country move forward. Such narratives have hindered progress in the past. They can diminish the hope and morale of our people, especially in the ongoing fight against the extremist group al-Shabab. Our people need unity and hope to stand firm against this threat.

The struggle against al-Shabab is not an individual battle but a collective effort that requires the unity and solidarity of all Somalis. By fostering this unity, we can combat the forces that seek to destabilize our country. Your support and positive engagement can play a crucial role in this fight, bolstering the resolve of our people and strengthening the government’s efforts.

Our collective goal is a peaceful, stable, and prosperous Somalia. Achieving this vision requires the collaboration and support of every Somali. We implore you to use your influence to promote unity, encourage progress, and support initiatives to rebuild our nation and eradicate the threat of al-Shabab.

We deeply appreciate your attention to this critical matter and the potential support you can provide. We look forward to witnessing your contribution to Somalia’s journey towards a brighter future, and we are grateful for your commitment to our beloved homeland.”

With respect and hope,

Southern Somali Diaspora
