National Bureau of Statistics Releases Somalia

The National Bureau of Statistics released its July 2024 report on food and nutrition security risks in Somalia. This in-depth analysis, developed in collaboration with the World Bank, FAO, FSNAU, SWALIM, and WFP, integrates quantitative modeling and qualitative insights to identify emerging food security challenges nationwide. The report aims to enhance early crisis detection and foster coordinated responses among Somalia’s humanitarian and development organizations.

Report Highlights

  • Food Insecurity: The report identifies 620,000 people living in regions at risk of Emergency (IPC Phase 4) or worse food insecurity conditions. Areas such as Galgaduud, Gedo, Sanaag, Togdheer, and Woqooyi Galbeed are particularly at risk.
  • Vulnerable Districts: Beledxaawo, Berbera, and Hargeysa show significant vulnerability.
  • Child Malnutrition: The forecast predicts substantial malnutrition among children, driven by unpredictable weather patterns, including the potential effects of La Niña.

Contributing Factors

The report highlights the impact of diverse climatic conditions and related socio-economic issues on food security. Alerts emphasize the volatility of fuel and food prices, heightening the country’s vulnerability. Displacement and health issues complicate the situation, making proactive health interventions crucial.

Proactive Measures

As Somalia faces these complex challenges, the report provides actionable insights to strengthen resilience nationwide. Stakeholders are encouraged to use this vital resource to guide and coordinate their responses to the outlined food and nutrition security risks.
