Statement from the Ministry of Interior, Federal Affairs, and Reconciliation of the Federal Republic of Somalia

The Federal Government of Somalia (FGS), recognizing the critical role of the democratic process in strengthening Somalia’s election model, is closely monitoring the upcoming election in the northern regions of Somalia (Somaliland). The successful implementation of the one-person, one-vote system in regions like Puntland demonstrates the Somali people’s commitment to fair and transparent elections, reaffirming their right to elect their representatives at all levels of government.

In line with the new electoral model agreed upon by the National Consultative Council (NCC) on August 8, 2024, the Federal Cabinet approved and submitted three draft laws that further advance democratic governance. These are the Law on the Establishment of the Independent Electoral and Boundary Commission, the Political Parties Law, and the Elections Law.

Reflecting this commitment, the Federal Parliament has appointed a 15-member committee tasked with thoroughly reviewing these critical bills, enabling the Parliament to uphold and fulfill its constitutional duties. These efforts are vital for achieving the one-person, one-vote system at district, regional, and national levels, marking a significant step forward in Somalia’s democratization process.

The FGS reiterates its dedication to an inclusive, transparent, and credible electoral process that genuinely reflects the will of the Somali people. We call upon the international community to support this progress rooted in Somalia’s federal system and to respect Somalia’s sovereignty and unity, in line with international law.
