Another Human Rights Violation is the case of Mrs. Safia Tusmo.

In a troubling development that underscores the ongoing human rights violations in the so-called “Somaliland” region, Mrs. Safia Tusmo, a renowned singer from the Awdal region, has become a target of repression by the Hargeisa regime. Known for her outspoken views against the apartheid-like practices that have taken root in Hargeisa, Mrs. Tusmo’s situation reflects a broader pattern of intimidation and violence against those who dare to challenge the status quo.

The recent escalation of violence in Somaliland has seen the regime, supported by Ethiopia, exerting oppressive control over dissenting voices. This regime has shown a blatant disregard for human rights, making it feel untouchable in the face of international condemnation. Just recently, a member of the so-called parliament from Awdal region was abducted, beaten, and tortured, with his fate remaining unknown. The regime’s response to peaceful protests has been equally brutal; 72 women advocating for the humane treatment of their fellow parliamentarian were arrested and beaten, highlighting the regime’s intolerance for dissent.

The situation for Mrs. Tusmo escalated dramatically when her business and properties in Borama were destroyed and set ablaze by agents of the Hargeisa regime. This act of arson was not only a personal attack but also a calculated move to silence her voice, as she openly expressed her opinions against the injustices meted out by the regime. Her only “crime” was her heritage and her courageous willingness to speak against the oppressive regime that continues to marginalize those from the Awdal region.

The Awdal State Movement has condemned these barbaric acts in the strongest terms, asserting that they constitute criminal activities in violation of the UN Charter on Human Rights. They have called upon the international community, including the African Union and various human rights organizations, to recognize and condemn the apartheid-like regime in Hargeisa. The movement is also urging the Somalia Federal Government

to intervene and support the Awdal State Movement and its people in their struggle against this injustice.
This is not an isolated incident; it echoes the historical atrocities committed against the Lascanood people. The ongoing impunity enjoyed by the Hargeisa regime, due to the lack of international sanctions, has emboldened them to commit further acts of violence against those who express dissent or belong to different tribes. The normalization of such heinous acts threatens to unravel the fabric of society and lead to catastrophic consequences in the region.

The international community must act swiftly to prevent further tragedies from unfolding. The voices of the oppressed must not be silenced, and the accountability for human rights violations must be prioritized. The plight of Mrs. Safia Tusmo and others like her should serve as a wake-up call to all those who value justice, equality, and the fundamental rights of individuals. In the face of such adversity, solidarity and action are crucial to ensure that the rights of every individual, regardless of their background, are upheld and protected.
