Ceel Buh, a town in Northeastern Somalia, witnessed an unusual airstrike that has sparked widespread debate. Somali open sources report that the target was a vehicle belonging to a respected traditional elder from the Warsangali clan. Community members and local sources insist that this figure had no connections to ISIS or al-Shabaab.

Damage assessments from the scene suggest the use of a precision-guided missile with an estimated payload of 250 kilograms. Such weaponry is normally deployed against high-value militant targets, not community elders known for their standing in society. The incident highlights a serious operational and intelligence mistake.

This event recalls the tragic incident of September 2016, when Somali National Army personnel were killed in Galkacyo in an airstrike later blamed on faulty intelligence. The parallels are striking and troubling: once again, flawed information has produced civilian casualties and undermined trust between communities and counterterrorism operations.

The Consequences of a Misguided Strike

If confirmed, the strike could destabilize an already fragile region. Mistakes of this scale not only provoke anger among local communities but also hand extremist groups a new propaganda tool. The lesson from Galkacyo should have been clear: precision weapons are meaningless if the intelligence guiding them is wrong.

Qaran24.com has learned that many in the region are demanding an immediate and independent investigation, along with accountability for those responsible. Without such action, there is growing concern that incidents like Ceel Buh will continue to repeat, further damaging efforts to stabilize Somalia.
