Somalia Plans Closure of UNSOM Office in Mogadishu Amid Growing Self-Sufficiency

The Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Somalia has announced that technical teams from the Federal Government and the United Nations have commenced discussions in Mogadishu regarding the closure of the United Nations Assistance Mission in Somalia (UNSOM) office. This initiative reflects Somalia’s increasing self-sufficiency and progress towards assuming greater responsibility for its own governance and security.

The discussions, which mark the first meeting between the two parties on this matter, aim to outline a strategic plan for the orderly completion of UNSOM’s operations in Mogadishu.

According to sources within the government, the acceleration of this closure aligns with Somalia’s advancements in governance and its enhanced capacity to manage national affairs independently.

In light of these developments, the United Nations Security Council has scheduled an emergency meeting for Monday to address the evolving situation in Somalia.

The meeting will feature a crucial address by James Swan, the UN Special Envoy for Somalia, who is expected to provide insights into the country’s current status and future prospects.
