Ambassador Abukar Osman, Somalia’s Permanent Representative to the United Nations, spoke at the United Nations Security Council (UNSC) today to discuss advancements in the nation’s governance and security sectors. He highlighted the start of efforts between the government and the UN to transition UNSOM into the Country Team.
Ambassador Osman mentioned to the UNSC that a joint technical group consisting of members from Somalia and the UN has initiated discussions on how to proceed with this transition. The goal is to improve coordination and streamline support mechanisms in line with Somalia’s changing requirements. This process is anticipated to reinforce Somalia’s structures and bolster development initiatives.
During his speech, Ambassador Osman underscored Somalia’s dedication to reforms in implementing a one-person, one-vote electoral system. Ambassador Osman also pointed out operations carried out by the Somali National Army (SNA) against the extremist group Al Shabaab.
