The history of Somalia is a testament to the resilience and fighting spirit of its people against imperialism and colonialism. From the ancient Punt Empire to the powerful Ajuran, Ifat, and Adal empires, Somali history is marked by a consistent struggle against foreign dominance, particularly from European powers.

A- Early Empires and Resistance

The Punt Empire, often regarded as one of the earliest Somali civilizations, thrived on trade and cultural exchange with ancient Egypt and other neighbouring regions. This empire laid the groundwork for a sense of identity and unity among Somali people. Following Punt, the Ajuran Empire emerged as a significant force, notable for its sophisticated governance, impressive architectural achievements, and military prowess.

The Ajuran Empire is particularly remembered for its successful resistance against Portuguese invaders in the 16th century. The decisive battle that led to the defeat of the Portuguese and the death of their leader, Vasco da Gama, is a proud moment in Somali history, symbolizing the triumph of a united front against imperial forces.

The legacies of the Ifat and Adal empires further reinforced the idea of a resilient Somali identity, characterized by a collective struggle against external threats. These empires engaged in fierce battles to protect their sovereignty, showcasing the enduring spirit of the Somali people.

B- The Era of Siad Barre

Fast forward to the late 20th century, Somalia experienced a significant political shift with the rise of the military regime led by Siad Barre. Barre’s government aimed to foster a sense of national unity encapsulated in the concept of “Somalinimo,” promoting the idea of a singular Somali identity that transcended clan divisions.

During this time, Somalia became a vocal supporter of liberation movements across Africa, aiding countries like South Africa, Zimbabwe, Eritrea, and the Tigray People’s Liberation Front (TPLF) in their struggles against colonial and oppressive regimes. Somalia even extended diplomatic privileges to these movements, further solidifying its commitment to pan-Africanism.

However, Barre’s increasing authoritarianism and the subsequent disintegration of his regime in the early 1990s led to chaos and fragmentation. The promise of independence to various tribal militias by Western powers exacerbated divisions, dismantling the very fabric that had united Somalis for centuries. The rise of regional militias, each declaring their own president, created a chaotic landscape where the concept of a unified Somali state began to crumble.

C- The Current Crisis and Call for Unity

Today, the situation in Somalia remains precarious. The existence of multiple regional leaders, each vying for power, raises questions about the coherence of the federal system. Unlike other federal systems around the world, Somalia’s fragmentation—characterized by 18 regions, each with its own president—poses significant challenges to national unity and governance.

The international community, particularly the African Union (AU) and the United Nations (UN), has been criticized for their handling of the situation in Somalia. Observers question why they have allowed this fragmentation to persist, undermining the federal government of Somalia. The Somali people are weary of the ongoing violence, interference from foreign entities like Ethiopia and the UAE, and the ineffective presence of foreign troops who seem to prioritize their own agendas over the fight against terrorism, particularly against groups like Al-Shabaab.

D- A Call for Solidarity

The Somali people are calling for a revival of national unity and support for their federal government. It is crucial for the international community to recognize the legitimacy of the Somali government and help restore law and order. The historical legacy of resistance against imperialism and colonialism should serve as a reminder of the strength and determination of the Somali people.

As Somalia stands at a crossroads, it is time for its citizens to rally behind their government, reclaim their identity, and work towards a cohesive and prosperous nation. The future of Somalia depends on unity, resilience, and the unwavering spirit that has characterized its history through centuries of struggle.
