Ethiopian Contingent to Hand Over Forward Operating Base in Central Somalia to Somali National Army.

central Somalia, the African Union Mission in Somalia (ATMIS) has announced plans to hand over the forward operating base located in Mahaas, Hiiraan region, to the Somali National Army (SNA). This transfer is part of the ongoing phase 3 troop drawdown of ATMIS forces in the region.

The base, currently operated by an Ethiopian contingent under ATMIS, has been pivotal in supporting security operations in the area. Senior officials from ATMIS recently conducted a thorough assessment of the base’s readiness for the impending handover. This move marks a strategic transition towards increasing Somali ownership and responsibility for security operations in the region.

We are committed to supporting the Somali National Army as they take on an expanded role in securing their country,” stated a spokesperson from ATMIS, emphasizing the mission’s dedication to fostering long-term stability and peace in Somalia.

The decision comes amid efforts to enhance the capacity and capability of the Somali National Army, bolstering its effectiveness in combating extremist groups and maintaining security across the country. ATMIS, alongside international partners, continues to provide advisory and logistical support to facilitate a smooth transition of responsibilities.

The handover of the Mahaas base signifies a step forward in Somalia’s journey towards self-reliance in security matters, reflecting broader efforts to gradually reduce international military presence while strengthening national institutions. Local residents and officials have expressed cautious optimism, highlighting the importance of sustained support to ensure the successful integration of the Somali National Army into broader security frameworks.

As preparations for the handover progress, both ATMIS and Somali authorities remain focused on maintaining stability and mitigating potential security challenges in the Hiiraan region and beyond. The international community, including the United Nations and neighboring countries, continues to reaffirm their commitment to supporting Somalia’s path to lasting peace and development.

The ATMIS mission, established in 2007, remains a pivotal force in Somalia’s security landscape, working in tandem with Somali security forces and international partners to address threats posed by extremist groups and other destabilizing factors. The gradual troop drawdown aligns with broader objectives to transition primary security responsibilities to Somali institutions, paving the way for a more secure and resilient Somalia.
