Officers from the Somali National Army, working alongside Turkish military electrical engineers, have developed a new system aimed at neutralizing improvised explosive devices (IEDs) used by Al-Shabaab.

These roadside bombs, often buried along key routes, have caused significant casualties and operational challenges for Somali forces. The new system is based on intelligence gathered from captured bomb-makers and technical analysis of their devices.

How Al-Shabaab IEDs Operate

According to field intelligence and engineering analysis:

  • Al-Shabaab primarily uses homemade explosive devices powered by:
    • A 12-volt battery
    • Electrical current typically ranges between 8 and 9 volts
  • These IEDs are triggered in two main ways:
    • Pressure-based activation (weight-triggered)
    • Remote detonation using mobile phones (SIM-based systems)
  • Additional findings:
    • The group relies on specific signal frequencies to trigger devices
    • Some systems also utilize radio wave signals
    • Their designs include capacitors to store and release electrical energy for detonation

The Counter-IED System

The newly developed system targets the electrical mechanism of these explosives.

This system can disable or neutralize IEDs from a distance of up to 150 feet before forces reach the danger zone.

How it works:

  • It emits a form of directed electromagnetic interference (radiation signal) toward the device
  • This signal disrupts the capacitor, which is essential for storing the charge needed to detonate the bomb
  • Once the capacitor is neutralized:
    • The circuit behaves as if the power wire has been cut
    • The electrical flow is interrupted at the resistor stage
    • The energy returns to the battery instead of triggering the explosive
  • The IED becomes inactive within a fraction of a second
  • The entire detonation system shuts down before activation

Testing and Current Status

  • The system is currently in the testing phase
  • Initial tests have shown strong indicators of success
  • So far, testing has been conducted primarily on:
    • Nokia mobile phone-triggered devices

This is significant because: Most of the communication-triggered IEDs used by Al-Shabaab rely on basic mobile phones with a similar architecture

Strategic Implications

If the system proves fully reliable:

  • It could eliminate one of Al-Shabaab’s most effective weapons
  • It would significantly reduce: Roadside ambushes and Casualties among Somali forces
  • It may shift the tactical balance on the ground, limiting the group’s ability to control movement and territory
