Mr. President, Somalia Can’t Afford to Stall—It’s Time to Move Beyond Clan Politics
By a Somali Citizen
Mr. President Hassan Sheikh Mohamud,
I write to you not just as a concerned citizen but as someone who has witnessed the ebb and flow of our nation’s political tides. From 2012 to 2017, your leadership saw the establishment of regional administrations and the conduct of elections in 2017 however from 2017 to somalia has experience setback, with delays and challenges that have hindered our progress.
The 4.5 clan-based power-sharing system, introduced as a temporary measure in 2000 was meant to stabilize our nation post-civil war. However, decades later, it has become a barrier to true democracy, marginalizing minority clans and entrenching divisions. This system has often led to power struggles, with each clan vying for dominance, leaving the average Somali citizen sidelined.
Your recent push for constitutional amendments aiming for universal suffrage and a shift from a parliamentary to a presidential system is a bold move. However, such significant changes are made by consulting with members of parliament representing various clans to ensure the nation’s collective interest is prioritized but we n=iid to be fulfilled parliament decision
To truly move forward, we must:
- Embrace Multiparty Democracy: Transition from clan-based politics to a system where political parties represent ideologies and policies, not clan affiliations. This will encourage national unity and policy-driven governance.
- Fulfill Parliamentary Decisions: Implement the decisions made by our parliament, which represents the diverse voices of our nation, to guide Somalia’s path forward.
- Strengthen Institutions: Build robust institutions that can withstand political pressures and serve the Somali people effectively, ensuring checks and balances are in place.
- Promote Civic Education: Educate citizens about their rights and the importance of participation in a democratic system, fostering a culture of accountability.
Mr. President, the path ahead is challenging, but with decisive leadership that respects and acts upon parliamentary decisions, Somalia can overcome its historical divisions. Let’s prioritize the nation’s collective interest over individual or clan ambitions. The Somali people deserve a future defined by unity, progress, and genuine democracy.
Sincerely,
A Hopeful Somali Citizen
