The deployment of Turkey’s advanced drilling ship, Çağrı Bey, to Somalia represents a landmark moment in the country’s energy journey. Officially dispatched from Taşucu port in Mersin, southern Turkey, with participation from Somali and Turkish energy officials, this mission marks the first time Turkey has sent a drilling vessel beyond its own waters, underscoring the historic significance of Somalia’s growing strategic partnerships..

The ship is set to navigate past the Namibian coast to reach Mogadishu, a voyage reflecting both the scale of the operation and Somalia’s readiness to host advanced energy projects. This step follows preliminary seismic surveys conducted by the vessel Oruç Reis, which identified promising offshore reserves.

Somalia’s resilience is on full display. Despite decades of under-exploration, the country has established frameworks capable of attracting major international partners. Collaboration with Turkey highlights strategic foresight, combining technical expertise and governance capacity to ensure the responsible development of natural resources.

The offshore and onshore sedimentary basins entering the drilling phase could transform Somalia’s economy. Çağrı Bey’s arrival signals that years of preparation and planning are moving directly into active exploration, setting the stage for potential future production.

Beyond oil, this milestone illustrates Somalia’s growing credibility on the global stage. Successfully managing such a complex operation demonstrates that the nation can leverage its resources for infrastructure, jobs, and institutional strengthening.

If the operation succeeds, 2026 may be remembered as the year Somalia began turning untapped potential into tangible national progress—an era where energy wealth is harnessed responsibly to drive sustainable development and prosperity.
