The power of Social media Efforts Against Al-Shabaab

The Somali government and Al-Shabaab are locked in a long-standing struggle for influence over the Somali population. This battle goes beyond armed conflict, extending into narratives and public opinion, critical in shaping the country’s future.

In 2017, President Mohamed Abdullahi Farmaajo rose to power, primarily supported by an effective social media campaign. His administration effectively used online platforms to reach a broad audience and consolidate its base. However, the political landscape began to shift following significant events, such as the devastating Zobe bombing in October 2017. Public trust eroded, with many criticizing Farmaajo’s administration. Despite this, the government maintained a significant online presence, purchasing pre-established social media accounts to amplify its message.

Today, the digital environment has changed significantly. Social media usage in Somalia has grown by 16% over the last few years, with most new users concentrated in urban areas such as Mogadishu, Baidoa, and Hargeisa. This urban audience increasingly supports the current government under President Hassan Sheikh Mohamud, providing a fresh opportunity to counter Al-Shabaab’s influence. Recognizing the power of social media, opposition groups, and Al-Shabaab have tried to use these platforms to gain support. However, these efforts have been largely ineffective as public opinion shifted against them. The Somali government, therefore, holds a critical advantage in this digital era.

The question now is whether the government is fully utilizing its potential. Critics point out that political appointments often favor loyalty over competence, raising concerns about officials’ ability to effectively engage the population. To succeed, the Somali government must refine its strategy. This includes hiring skilled professionals to manage its digital communication, engaging urban youth, and addressing the issues that matter most to citizens. Strengthening trust through improved governance and security is essential. At the same time, efforts must focus on exposing and countering extremist propaganda, which continues to exploit vulnerabilities online. Somalia’s digital transformation presents a chance to redefine national narratives and foster unity. To achieve this, the government must act purposefully and ensure its resources are used effectively. By doing so, Somalia can take a step closer to stability and liberation from Al-Shabaab’s grip.
