The campaign for United States recognition of Somaliland is built on an incomplete understanding of Somalia’s political geography. Its advocates present recognition as a simple strategic opportunity for Washington, but they rarely address the wider diplomatic, security and political consequences.

Unilateral recognition would not occur in a vacuum. It could place the United States at odds with Somalia’s federal government while creating unnecessary tension with African and Arab states that support Somalia’s territorial integrity. Washington would be creating a major political dispute where none currently exists—and for uncertain strategic returns.

As a Somali American with a strong understanding of both countries, I believe America’s long-term interests are better served by maintaining a constructive relationship with Somalia as a whole. The United States needs a stable national partner capable of supporting counterterrorism, maritime security, regional trade and the protection of the Red Sea and Indian Ocean corridors.

The Somaliland administration does not exercise uncontested authority over all the territory it claims. Several clans  in northern Somalia reject its political project and continue to identify with the Federal Republic of Somalia. A security partnership built on disputed territory and limited local consent would therefore remain vulnerable to internal conflict and political instability.

Recognition would also risk transforming a domestic Somali dispute into an international confrontation. External backing for one side could deepen clan divisions, encourage territorial competition and create new grievances. A policy intended to produce stability could easily achieve the opposite.

Somaliland may offer opportunities for limited economic and security cooperation, but cooperation does not require diplomatic recognition. The United States can maintain practical relations with local administrations while continuing to respect Somalia’s sovereignty and internationally recognized borders.

America should consider the larger strategic picture. Somalia is a significant country with one of Africa’s longest coastlines, abundant natural resources and a central position connecting the Horn of Africa, the Red Sea and the Indian Ocean. A united, stable and cooperative Somalia would offer Washington far greater long-term value than recognition of a disputed breakaway administration.

Recognizing Somaliland might secure the support of one political authority, but it could alienate millions of Somalis, including many Somali Americans, and damage America’s relationship with Somalia for generations. The wiser strategy is clear: support dialogue, national stability and a united Somalia.
