Stabilizing Mogadishu is Key to Somalia’s Peace

Mogadishu’s stability is critical for achieving a secure and unified Somalia. For decades, the city has faced turmoil, affecting its residents and the entire country. However, recent efforts led by President Hassan Sheikh Mohamud and Prime Minister Hamza offer a glimmer of hope. While progress has been made, lasting change will require time and consistent effort.

Historically, Mogadishu has endured a lack of law and order, creating generations of citizens who lived in fear and adapted to insecurity. Businesses were forced to shut down early due to violence, government forces acted without accountability, and Al-Shabaab extorted citizens with impunity. Road closures compounded these struggles, further stifling economic activity. This instability weakened public trust in institutions and fueled conflict.

Since taking office in May 2022, President Hassan and his team have worked diligently to improve conditions. Security has been enhanced, businesses operate with greater freedom, and accountability within government forces has been strengthened. Al-Shabaab’s influence in the city has weakened through targeted actions, restoring hope for Mogadishu’s future. These are more than small victories—they demonstrate that meaningful progress is possible.

However, patience and long-term support are necessary for Mogadishu’s stability to be sustained and expanded nationwide. Building solid institutions and reducing extremism requires a decade of committed governance and focused efforts. Stability in Mogadishu sets the stage for a stable Somalia, creating a ripple effect that can foster economic growth and national unity. This transformation, while challenging, is within reach if President Hassan and his administration are given the time they need.

Somalia’s peace begins in Mogadishu. Focusing on the city’s security and governance can create a model for stability that benefits the entire nation. Supporting President Hassan’s vision offers Somalia the best chance at a peaceful and prosperous future.
