Somalia’s new E-Visa system has become one of the most important security reforms introduced in recent years. Government officials say the digital platform is already making a significant difference in preventing foreign militants from entering the country.

A New Layer of Protection

According to Somalia’s Minister of Defense, Ahmed Moalim Fiqi, the upgraded E-Visa system has stopped thousands of people who tried to travel to Somalia with the intention of joining extremist groups such as ISIS and Al-Shabaab.

Before the digital system was introduced, many of these fighters entered the country by taking advantage of weak screening procedures. One of the most commonly used entry points was Hargeisa’s Egal International Airport in the Somaliland region.

Minister Fiqi said that flight-tracking information and passport screenings showed a clear pattern:
ISIS-linked individuals frequently routed through Hargeisa before attempting to enter Somalia.

No Foreign Fighters Since E-Visa Launch

Minister Fiqi highlighted a major achievement: since the E-Visa became mandatory, no foreign fighters from ISIS or Al-Shabaab have been able to enter Somalia.

All travelers must now submit their information online, undergo background checks, and receive approval before arriving. This has closed many of the loopholes that extremists previously used.

“A Critical System for Our Safety”

Somalia’s National Security Minister, Senator Fartaag, described the E-Visa system as essential for the country’s stability.

“The E-Visa system is a critical tool for Somalia’s security,” Fartaag said.

He added that stronger control at airports, seaports, and land borders is helping limit the movement of extremist groups. Without easy entry routes, these groups face greater challenges in sending new fighters into the country.

Building a Safer and More Modern Entry Process

The E-Visa is also part of Somalia’s broader effort to modernize its immigration and aviation procedures. The system:

  • improves identity verification
  • screens high-risk travelers
  • enhances coordination with airport authorities
  • creates a clearer record of who is entering the country

For ordinary travelers — including business visitors and members of the Somali diaspora — the system provides a more organized and transparent entry process.

A Step Toward Long-Term Stability

Security experts say the E-Visa represents a major step forward. By limiting the ability of extremist groups to move across borders, Somalia is strengthening national stability and reducing long-standing risks.

The new system shows that even small digital reforms can make a large impact when it comes to national protection.
